We are always happy to visit Traverse City, Michigan. Traveling by boat is the only way in my opinion, because the water and the scenery in Grand Traverse Bay is gorgeous.
It takes us almost three hours to travel from Lake Charlevoix to Clinch Marina where we were docked. In this mini “mesh” photo gallery is a pic of a sail boat, and my husband on our power boat. Also, at Clinch Park, I quickly grabbed my camera to capture the cutie patootie toddler, who at first, seemed to be walking all alone. I love taking pictures, and there are lots of opportunities to capture beautiful sunrises and sunsets too.

Our Voyage

It rained on our anniversary this year, but the rainbow was a gift. –We docked at Traverse City, Michigan – Clinch Marina in Grand Traverse Bay.

It takes time away from the every day work schedules to reflect. Time to think about how I’m leading my life and how I would like to feel like this, relaxed on vacation, and thinking about what I can do better. How can I be a better wife, be as creative as I can during the work week. I create more beaded jewelry on vacations than I do during a regular work week! My husband is very understanding and has valuable input to quality control. He also has a creative eye. If only we had more hours in the day to enjoy the fun stuff. Our fourth wedding anniversary has arrived today, and I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for us!

August Treasures

Say hello to August and the birthstone Peridot.

Imagine a beach that sparkles with the crystals of Peridot. On the Island of Oahu, it is so very treasured, that the people have illuminated many beaches by adding tiny grains of light green crystals.

A Little History

Miners have found Peridot in volcanic rocks and even meteors that landed on Earth. It is the only gemstone that comes in one color, and is not heat-treated to alter the color, as many gemstones are. Because it is sensitive to fast changes in temperature, it is not advisable to clean Peridot with an ultrasonic method.

Since 1500 B.C. valuable Peridot was mined near Egypt, on St. Johns Island, in the Red Sea. However, it was nearly depleted up to the time WW1 began. Later, it became more abundant in 1994 after a mine was discovered in Pakistan, west of the Himalayan Mountains. Today, in Arizona, 90% of the worlds Peridot comes from the San Carlos Apache Reservation, a very large source, which is mined only by the Apache Indians.

Peridot can be found in museums all over the world, with the largest on display at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., containing 310 carats. The second largest documented display is the Shrine of the Magi with 200 carats. It is located in the Dom, a Gothic Cathedral in Cologne, Germany. In 1988, I viewed the breathtaking shrine which is a reliquary for the Wise Men or Three Kings who visited the birth of Jesus.

Traveling in Europe left a big impression on me, it was amazing and unforgettable. For me, it is easier to understand and remember history when art plays an important role in our world.

Inspiration Therapy

In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Inspiration.”

Inspiration to create can come from where I feel balance. Balance in a color scheme I’m working on, or even in that feeling of accomplishment. Completing a challenging day at work, then returning home to receive a big hug from my husband where he meets me at the doorway, every day. And of course, the colors of the light, softly painted into an amazing summer sunset at the Northport Marina.

It’s Quiet on Beaver Island

In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Half and Half.”

It was a quiet morning at the marina on Beaver Island. I decided to photograph the morning light and capture the stillness of the water, and its reflections from the lighthouse. This is Lake Michigan on a misty, gray morning in June. As I stepped off
the boat onto the dock, I remembered a photography tip from my Dad, “watch the horizon line, make it straight.” I quietly walked down the dock to an open boat slip, not to disturb the other boaters still sleeping. Normally, I don’t divide a landscape image in half
when I compose a shot, but this time it was a perfect opportunity to blend the sky
with the water.

Beaver Island is a great boating destination if you want to get away from crowds of vacationing people from down state, what we refer to in Michigan as, “fudgies”. It offers great sunsets, and a laid-back atmosphere. It is approximately 30 miles off the coast, with two ferry services from Charlevoix. It is the largest Island in Lake Michigan.

Anchor Your Happiness

A customer of mine told me that anchors have a lot of meaning to her and that she was having some health issues. When I asked her to explain, she said, “an anchor is a symbol of strength and stability.” She inspired me to make more anchor jewelry and I wrote this.
